Aberdeen confirmed as the future headquarters for Great British Energy
Aberdeen is confirmed as the location for the headquarters of Great British Energy, a publicly-owned company backed by a capitalisation of £8.3billion that will invest in “clean, home-grown energy”.
Great British Energy (GB Energy) was announced in July 2024. GB Energy has multiple aims, founded on the desire to reap the benefits of Britain’s abundant natural resources and secure future energy supplies.
The UK Government signaled its commitment to home-grown clean energy in July 2024, lifting the ban on onshore wind and then proposing the Great British Energy Bill in the house of Commons in September 2024. The Bill will move onto the House of Lords in due course. Once passed, the Bill will allow the State to provide financial assistance that will support its aims of delivering clean power projects across the country, in a reindustrialization of Britain that will create thousands of new jobs.
A partnership with The Crown Estate, an independent organization with a £16 billion portfolio of land and seabed, has already been announced that will accelerate deployment of offshore wind farms. The initiative has bold ambitions, aiming to accelerate delivery of up to 20-30 GW of extra offshore wind seabed leases to the market by 2030 - enough power for almost 20 million homes.
Private investment potential is significant, with estimates of £30-60 billion of investment being leveraged, supporting new the development and construction of energy projects.
The move forms part of the UK Government’s plans to support clean energy in the North Sea, ensuring Aberdeen continues to thrive as Scotland’s clean energy capital.
